All we know about King Charles III coronation and if we get a bank holiday

Charles was made king of the United Kingdom immediately after his mother, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth died on Thursday September 8.

King Charles III was proclaimed as the monarch in the following days with traditional proclamations across the country - however we will likely be waiting a while before we see his coronation.

He was officially given the title of King Charles III in St James Palace on September 11, 2022, but it is tradition for there to be a significant amount of time to mourn before the coronation.

According to the Telegraph, it is thought that King Charles III won't be coronated until the Spring next year. In fact, Queen Elizabeth had her coronation on June 3 1953, more than a year after the death of her father King George which fell on February 6 1952.

Coronations are a state event and it is expected to be a bank holiday, though the exact date will be announced at later time.

The Queen Consort Camilla will also be crowned on the day, at Westminster Abbey.

On the official Royal website, discussing coronations, they said: "The coronation of the new Sovereign follows some months after his or her accession, following a period of mourning and as a result of the enormous amount of preparation required to organise the ceremony.

"Present are representatives of the Houses of Parliament, Church and State. Prime ministers and leading citizens from the Commonwealth and representatives of other countries also attend."
