All the world’s a stage at Delhi University

It was the mid-1960s. Kabir Bedi had joined St Stephen’s College as a student of history and became a member of its famed Shakespeare Society. He was soon busy with acting, directing and producing numerous plays — but one particular performance stands out in his memory. “My production of Julius Caesar had Kapil Sibal as Caesar, while I played the lowly Roman character Casca. Later, a students’ magazine commented that Caesar had been murdered twice — once by Brutus and the other by Sibal,” he chuckled.

Over the decades, Delhi University has been the training ground for many passionate young actors who’ve made a mark in the world of film, television and theatre. From Bedi, Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan to Lilette Dubey, Manoj Bajpayee and Konkona Sen Sharma, DU’s college dramatics societies have launched numerous careers.
