All The Tea From Meryl Streep & Anna Wintour’s Vogue Cover, From Sequel Updates To Melania Trump Shade

The Devil Wears Prada star Meryl Streep has sat down with the Devil herself, and her name is Anna Wintour. The actress and former Vogue editor delivered a joint interview as the latest cover stars for the fashion magazine, in the lead up to The Devil Wears Prada 2.

If you’re not across the lore, Streep’s fashion editor character in the iconic movie, Miranda Priestly, is heavily inspired by Wintour, so this Vogue cover is like Inception for chick flick stans or the Super Bowl for the girls and the gays. Such a momentous occasion was bound to come with a few revelations.

So to avoid moving at a glacial pace, here’s the juiciest insights we learned from Meryl Streep and Anna Wintour’s Vogue cover issue. That’s all.

It was Anna Wintour’s first-ever Vogue cover

One somewhat shocking bit of tea from Streep and Wintour’s photoshoot was that it marked the latter’s debut appearance on the cover of Vogue, despite her serving as its editor for 37 years. Wintour stepped down from those duties last year, so what better time to make your mark on the ship you steered for almost four decades?

Anna Wintour reckons Miranda Priestly is “distant” from her true self

Touching on just how inspirational she really was in the creation of Miranda Priestly, Wintour said the fictional character is “distant” from her real self. Still, she admitted it’s “such an honor to be played by Meryl” because “who wouldn’t think that that wasn’t the most extraordinary gift?” Did she lie?

The first Devil Wears Prada movie is based on the 2004 novel of the same title by Lauren Weisberger, who was one of Wintour’s real-life former assistants. That’s why the character of Miranda was connected to Wintour in the first place, but Wintour has bristled against the link in the past.

Last year, Wintour described Miranda as a “caricature” version of herself but conceded that she found The Devil Wears Prada “highly enjoyable” and “very funny”.

Designers were scared to dress Meryl Steep for The Devil Wears Prada

Streep also revealed that rumblings of Miranda’s real-life inspiration while working on the first movie sent some costume designers fleeing, lest they incur in the wrath of Vogue’s top dog. “Everybody was afraid of Anna on the first one, so we couldn’t find any clothes. Nobody would give us any clothes,” Streep said.

Thankfully they were able to wrangle a few designers, which is why we were blessed with that street style montage of Andy Sachs (Anne Hathaway) soundtracked by Madonna’s “Vogue”. The joy I felt writing that sentence is how I know I’m gay. A gay guy living for The Devil Wears Prada? Groundbreaking.

Meryl Streep gave Anna Wintour a heads up about The Devil Wears Prada sequel

Wintour revealed that she’d heard whispers of a Devil Wears Prada sequel before it was officially announced, at which point she called Streep to get all the tea. “When I heard rumors that this new film might be happening, I called Meryl to ask if it was true. I knew she would tell me if it was going to be all right,” Wintour recalled.

“She hadn’t yet read the script, so she said she’d call me back. And that’s what she did. She read the script. She called me back and said, ‘Anna, I think it’s going to be all right’. She told me very little about what happens in the film, but I trusted her implicitly,” Wintour added.

What I’d give to be a cerulean sweater-wearing fly on the wall for that phone call!

Meryl Streep and Anna Wintour could never trade places

Though she can certainly act the part, Streep admitted that she could never be the editor of a fashion magazine, quipping that she’d “dread the shoes” required for the role. For her part, Wintour said doesn’t have the chops to pull off acting. “I have absolutely no gifts,” she said.

“I have absolutely no gifts at all. I can’t sing, I can’t dance, I can’t act, I’m useless with my hands, I can’t cook, I certainly can’t sew,” Wintour when asked whether she’d ever consider an acting career. One gift she does have is making those glasses they give you at the dentist look chic, which is more than I can say for myself!

Meryl took a swipe at Melania Trump

What would an interview with the incarnation of Miranda Priestly be without a spot of shade? Streep took a moment to call out Melania Trump over the controversial jacket she wore while visiting migrant children in 2018.

“I think the most … powerful message that our current First Lady sent was in the coat that said ‘I Really Don’t Care, Do U?’ when she was going to see migrant children who were incarcerated,” Streep recalled.

“All dress is about expressing yourself, but we’re also subject to larger historical and political sweeps of expectation,” she added. Read through the lines and that’s basically Miranda chastising Andy over her cerulean sweater, and I absolutely love to see it.

Those were all the biggest takeaways we caught from Anna Wintour and Meryl Streep’s Vogue cover, and with The Devil Wears Prada 2 hitting Aussie cinemas on April 30, we can’t wait to see how the actress further borrows from the iconic fashion mogul.

This is gonna be huge!
