All the puns as ice cream van caught topping 60mph

An ice cream van driver faces coughing up some lolly after being caught speeding by road traffic cops. The red Mr Whippy truck was caught zooming at 62mph along the A6 Broad Street in Salford when he was spotted by Greater Manchester Police's traffic unit.

Police officers joked they could not “cone-done” the poor quality of the driving. And social media users also poked fun at the speeding vendor with a flurry of replies, with one wag asking: "Was it being driven with flake number plates?"

Twitter users were quick to recall a famous gag on the Morecambe and Wise show in the 1970s in which comedian Eric Morecambe hears an ambulance siren and quips: “He won't sell much ice cream going at that speed”.

And another joked it would have been more appropriate if the van was travelling at 99mph, in reference to the classic ice cream. One wag quipped: “He or she will get their just desserts.”

Another tweeted: “It could have been worse, they could have been whipping along at 99…” A third added: “Flaky evidence at best. 99 problems but the van ain’t one. While a further user joked: “What a scoop”.

Greater Manchester Police tweeted: “We see all kinds of speeding vehicles on our roads in Greater Manchester. This van was caught on a Friday and not on a Sundae.

“This Ice Cream vans speed was recorded at 62 MPH we can't cone-done that behaviour.”

The infringement was captured by CCTV last Friday, April 21, as the van drove over Bank Lane Bridge. A police spokesman said the driver had been issued with a notice of intended prosecution.
