All the areas of Wales that will see rain this weekend ahead of thunderstorm warning

There will be a change in the weather this weekend, with the potential for frequent lightning, strong winds, and hail hitting Wales. The Met Office has issued a thunderstorm warning for the whole of Wales on Sunday, June 18, marking a change to the current heatwave.

Where the storms will hit is notoriously difficult to forecast which is why there is such a large warning area. The yellow alert is in place from midday until midnight on Sunday and says "heavy showers and thunderstorms" are likely to develop across parts of England and Wales during Sunday with longer spells of thundery rain in places. According to the Met Office, it is predicted that many areas will see at least some rain but in "only relatively small amounts". However, some areas could see up to 30mm in an hour or even 60mm in six hours. With that in mind, we've looked at all the areas of Wales that will see rain this weekend ahead of the yellow warning for thunderstorm.

Saturday, June 17

9AM

Parts of Powys and north Wales will experiencing a scattering of showers. The rain will affect areas such as Builth Wells and Hay-on-Wye, as well as small clusters in Gwynedd and Conwy in the north. Downpour will be at its heaviest in the Hay-on-Wye area, with it expected to reach 4-8mm in an hour.

12PM

By midday, the rainfall will have virtually cleared from the whole of Wales, while rain will be affecting parts of the Irish Sea as well as parts of the Midlands and southeast England.

3PM

Later in the afternoon, rain will have returned to parts of Wales, including parts of Vale of Glamorgan, Powys, Carmarthenshire, Pembrokeshire, Ceredigion, Gwynedd and Conwy. Areas such as Cardigan and Llandovery may see a particularly heavy downfall, with rain forecast to reach as high as 32mm an hour.

6PM

In the evening, rain will have shifted from the south and into mid and north Wales. Affected areas include Aberystwyth, Welshpool and Bangor in Gwynedd. It will be particularly heaving on the Anglesey coastline, as well as in parts of Powys which could see up to 32mm of rainfall in an hour.

Sunday, June 18

9AM

With the yellow weather warning for thunderstorm set to be underway, only a cluster of rain will have hit parts of Wales on Sunday morning. These affected areas include parts of Gwynedd and Anglesey, the latter of which is said to experience some heavy rainfall with 32mm an hour of downpour. Light showers is also forecasted for parts of Powys, Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire.

12PM

By midday, a scattering of showers will have hit various areas of Wales, especially in the north. Rain will have hit the coastline from Gwynedd, to Conwy, Denbighshire and Flintshire, with the latter particularly experiencing heavy rainfall of up to 32mm an hour in some parts of the county. Meanwhile, clusters of rain are set to hit areas of Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire.

3PM

In the afternoon, rain will continue to pour in areas of Gwynedd, Denbighshire and Flintshire, as well as Wrexham. Meanwhile south Wales will mostly be dry, but small areas of Powys as well as Ceredigion may experience some showers.

6PM

By Sunday evening, heavy rainfall is forecast to hit parts of Powys. Up to 32mm an hour of rainfall is set to affect areas between Llanwddyn and Welshpool in the county, as well as communities near the Welsh border. There will be clusters of rain in Merthyr Tydfil, north of Pembrokeshire and areas of the Eryri National Park and further north in Gwynedd.
