All Tamil Nadu districts register drop in new Covid cases

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu added 3,086 new cases of Covid-19 on Friday, discharged 14,051 patients and declared 25 deaths. At the end of the day, there were 56,002 active cases in the state registry.

All districts reported a drop in new cases compared to their Thursday tally. Chennai (590) and Coimbatore (569) reported the maximum number of cases in the state followed by Chengalpet (261). All other districts reported fewer than 200 cases.

While 27 of the 38 districts reported cases in two digits, Thirupathur (7), Mayiladuthurai (5), Perambalur (5) and Tenkasi (5) reported cases in single digits. "Cases have been falling drastically but we still can't drop our guard. We have to get ourselves vaccinated, wear a mask and maintain social distance," said health secretary J Radhakrishnan. "Experts including WHO say chances of mutations are also high. While vaccinations will prevent diseases, transmission can be slowed down if Covid protocols are maintained," he said.

Of the 56,002 active cases, 57% of them were in seven districts including Chennai (8057), Coimbatore (7394) and Chengalpet (4948). Of the 25 deaths, Chennai reported six, Tiruvallur had three and there were two each in Salem, Cuddalore and Madurai. "The elderly and the unvaccinated people are at the highest risk for complications and death," said director of medical education Dr R Narayanababu. More than 1 crore people are due for their second dose. At least 93,744 people above 15 years took their vaccination on Friday. Since January 10, 4.82 lakh people have taken booster doses.
