All Nippon Airways flight in Japan turns around after crack discovered in Boeing plane window

A flight in Japan needed to turn around and make an emergency landing after a crack was found in the cockpit window of the Boeing aeroplane.

All Nippon Airways Flight 1182 returned to its departure airport in Sapparo shortly after it had set off for Toyama on Saturday.

The incident follows a cabin panel breaking off a new Alaska Airlines jet in mid-air last week in what was also a Boeing plane.

The crack was found on the outermost of four layers of windows surrounding the cockpit, an All Nippon spokesman said, adding there were no injuries reported among the 59 passengers and six crew.

The airline added in a statement: “The crack was not something that affected the flight's control or pressurisation.”

The Boeing 737 is one of the manufacturers best selling planes in the world with more than 7,000 built and in use since 1996 although the production stopped in 2019.

The 737 Max that was used by Alaska Airlines is a larger variation of the plane used in Japan.

Alaska Airlines has called for the grounding of all of its models of that type after Boeing admitted a mistake was made in events that led to the panel blow out. Loose bolts were found in the aftermath of last week’s events

Boeing said in a statement: “As operators conduct the required inspections, we are staying in close contact with [Alaska Airlines] and will help address any and all findings.

“We are committed to ensuring every Boeing aeroplane meets design specifications and the highest safety and quality standards. We regret the impact this has had on our customers and their passengers.”

All Nippon Airways has been contacted by the Evening Standard for further comment.
