In-form striker Morgan Steedman admits making the top-flight play-off spot would be an “incredible opportunity” for St Johnstone WFC.
The Perth side remains in contention to finish second in the Scottish Women’s Premier League 2 going into the last day of the season shootout.
Despite sitting fifth in the current standings, Saints are only two points behind second-placed Gartcairn, who they defeated 3-2 last weekend to keep the promotion push alive.
Gartcairn have 44 points, third-placed Kilmarnock 43 points and fourth-placed Boroughmuir Thistle 42 points. Saints also have 42 points.
This Sunday, an exciting trip to Rugby Park to face off against Kilmarnock rounds off the campaign and Steedman is purely focused on getting three points.
“It was a great three points against Gartcairn to keep us in contention for the playoff,” Steedman said.
“We can only control our performance.
“It would be an incredible opportunity for the club to get to that stage but we have a job to do first.”
On the challenge presented by Kilmarnock, Steedman added: “We just have to work harder than Kilmarnock.
“They are an intense, strong and energetic team who know how to manage a game well. We need to make sure we use the pitch to our advantage and stick to the game plan that Jamie and Kev give us on the day.
“We need to make sure we perform as a team and not individuals and that will hopefully secure us the three points.”
Steedman heads for Ayrshire in high spirits having netted twice in last weekend’s win against Gartcairn. Steffi Simson was also on the scoresheet.
“We started off slow and were all a half pace off of it,” Steedman admitted.
“But at half time we had a chat and talked about how we needed to channel our energy into the right things.
“Second half I think we came out more dominant and definitely played some better football. I think that is the best football we have played on that pitch in terms of passing.”
Steedman had missed a penalty during the game but did not let that impact her performance.
“I was really pleased getting two goals,” she said. “I tried not to let the fact I missed the penalty get into my head and just continue working hard and playing, so I was really glad that paid off.
“It’s been an up-and-down season I think. As a whole team we have had some excellent spells and some poor spells, and I think I’ve directly mirrored that as a player.
“That is always going to happen but if we want promotion we need to try and limit the poor spells as much as possible.”
