All eyes on Irish at tonight's Golden Globes as Banshees of Inisherin leads the way

All eyes are on the Irish tonight at the glitzy Golden Globes awards in the US - as the Banshees of Inisherin leads the way with the most nominations.

Father and son acting stars Brendan and Domhnall Gleeson are among the nominees flying the flag for Ireland this year as the annual event is due to make a star-studded return this evening in California.

Brendan’s co-stars Kerry Condon, Colin Farrell, and Barry Keoghan, as well as writer-director Martin McDonagh have also been given the golden nod in the nominations for the 2023 awards, and could be in for wins tonight.

Condon, Farrell, Keoghan and Brendan Gleeson are all nominated for their performances in the London-Irish film maker's hit Irish dark comedy.

Condon is up for best actress in a supporting role against stiff competition in Carey Mulligan for her role in She Said, Dolly De Leon for Triangle of Sadness, Angela Bassett in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Jamie Lee Curtis in Everything Everywhere all at Once.

Colin Farrell, Barry Keoghan, "The Banshees of Inisherin" (2022) (Jonathan Hession/Searchlight Pictures/THA / Avalon)

Dubliner Farrell is shortlisted for best actor in a motion picture alongside Daniel Craig for Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, Adam Driver for White Noise, Diega Calva for Babylon and Ralph Fiennes for The Menu.

Co-stars Gleeson and Keoghan will go head to head in the the best supporting actor category - alongside Brad Pitt for his work in Babylon, Ke Huy Quan in Everything Everywhere all at Once and Eddie Redmayne in The Good Nurse.

Domhnall Gleeson is nominated for best actor in a supporting role in the TV series category for his performance in psychological thriller, The Patient.

The Banshees of Inisherin will lead the way tonight with eight nominations in total, with the award winning writer and director shortlisted for Best Director and Best Screenplay in the US awards.

The film is also in the running for Best Motion Picture - musical or comedy against Babylon, Everything Everywhere all at Once, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery and Triangle of Sadness.

Farrell is a previous Golden Globe winner for In Bruges, whilst McDonagh is a previous winner for his screenplay for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.

Brendan Gleeson has been shortlisted on four previous occasions. Condon, Domhnall Gleeson and Keoghan are first-time nominees.

Elsewhere, Michelle Yeoh's absurdist sci-fi comedy-drama Everything Everywhere All at Once follows behind the dark Irish comedy with six nominations for the US awards.

Steven Spielberg's personal movie The Fabelmans, about how he developed his love of film, is also a drama frontrunner, up against other movie hits this year including the Avatar sequel and Baz Luhrmann's rock-and-roll biopic Elvis.

Tom Cruise's Top Gun: Maverick is also up for a number of awards, whilst the acting star was notably missing from the shortlist for best actor.

Popular shows The White Lotus, Dahmer, The Crown, Pam & Tommy and Only Murders in the Building all scored four nominations apiece.

The Crown is also one of five contenders for best TV series (drama), joining Better Call Saul, Ozark, House of the Dragon and Severance.

The winners will be announced tonight at the 80th Golden Globe Awards from The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California, on NBC and Peacock.

The ceremony will air from 1am Irish time whilst highlights will air on RTÉ2 at 9.35pm on Wednesday night, preceded by Red Carpet highlights at 9.05pm.

Hollywood greats Quentin Tarantino, Jamie Lee Curtis, Jennifer Coolidge, Jennifer Hudson, Salma Hayek, Letitia Wright, Jenna Ortega, and Hilary Swank are among the celebrities set to present awards on the night.

It will mark the return of the event, which took place behind closed doors last year, after it became mired in controversy regarding diversity, sexism, and ethics after a Los Angeles Times investigation in February 2021, with A-listers, studios and PR firms subsequently boycotting the submission process.

The backlash prompted the HFPA to admit a raft of new members, overhaul its bylaws, and implement changes addressing ethics and inclusion.
