All Creatures Great and Small filming requires 'meticulous planning like a child cast'

The team behind All Creatures Great and Small say filming its animal cast members requires very precise ways of working.

Producer Melissa Gallant said strict rules on animal treatment required “meticulous planning”.

She added: “You have to treat them like a child cast!”

Naming the most difficult animal, she said at the BFI & Radio Times Television Festival: “The thing about cows is they’re herd animals.”

She explained: “So if you’re filming with a cow on set then it has to have a friend around the corner – or they’ll just moo and call out.”

The team are now filming series three, in which James Herriot (Nicholas Ralph) marries Helen Alderson (Rachel Shenton).

Rachel said the Channel 5 series’ popularity was boosted by its 2020 launch date.

She said: “It aired at a time when the world felt particularly cruel. It was about togetherness. It’s one of those shows where three generations can watch it together.”

The show’s third series is due to air in the autumn.
