Filming has begun on set in Yorkshire for the third series, with bosses teasing a lot of excitement ahead for the characters.

"In season three, Helen and James have become engaged, so I think it’s fair to say there may be a marriage on the horizon, perhaps. It’s 1939, so it will come as no surprise that war is looming and that will increasingly cast a shadow over our characters’ lives, " producer Ben Vanstone teased, "Ultimately, our show is about Darrowby and the world of the Yorkshire Dales and the farmers within it."

There will also be a string of moving stories in the next series.

Vanstone added: "There’s a great horse story in episode three, which is really moving, and I think it’s going to be fantastic. We don’t have any lambs in spring this year, come to think of it, but someone in Skeldale House might get a new pet."

The drama follows the life of veterinarian James Herriot, who has moved to the Yorkshire Dales. It is based off the a series of books about a veterinarian from Yorkshire, penned by Alf Wight under the name of James Herriot.

Opening up about James and Helen's relationship, actress Rachel teased that it will be "nice to watch" their romance blossom.

"Ultimately, as individuals, they are very caring, compassionate people, and care about each other, and the wellbeing of each other is at the forefront of everything they do," she said.

"It's a step tenderly towards the direction of where we all know it's going, but it isn't straightforward, but it will be nice to watch."

Channel 5 has renewed the show for a third and fourth series, with six episodes on offering for each season whilst there will also be two special festive episodes in the coming years.
