How team mechanics work in Marvel Tokon Fighting Souls
Developed through the collaboration between Marvel Games, PlayStation Studios, and Arc System Works, Marvel Tokon Fighting Souls features 4v4 team battles played in a best-of-three format. Unlike previous Marvel tag fighters, all four characters on a team share a single life bar. If that shared health pool is depleted, the entire team is defeated.
The game’s control scheme includes three normal attacks, two special attacks, and three quick moves for every character. Unique abilities are performed using the Unique Attack button combined with directional inputs, while the Assemble button calls teammates into battle for assists and tag-based plays.
Each team consists of one active fighter and three support characters. Assist attacks vary depending on their assigned direction during character selection. Forward assists are generally projectile-based attacks, downward assists serve as anti-air options, and backward assists provide character-specific utility or unique effects.
You begin each match with only two team members available. Additional teammates are unlocked during the fight by triggering specific actions such as Wall Breaks, which send opponents into another area of the stage. Once unlocked, these characters can be called in as assists for the rest of the match.
You can also tag into an assisting character by pressing Assemble again during their assist attack, instantly switching control while the previous active fighter moves into a support role. This system encourages constant character rotation and team synergy throughout a match.

Marvel Tokon Fighting Souls trailer
Seriously, I got hyped while watching this trailer. It took me right back to being a kid playing the Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter arcade game, eagerly steering the joystick and mashing the buttons as I went up against teenagers using my favorite Spider-Man and Wolverine duo. Well, Marvel Tokon has that same energy, and it might just be the game that convinces me to buy an arcade stick and get back into fighting games again.
