All candidates for Texas House of Representatives District 115 Democratic primary complete Ballotpedia’s Candidate Connection survey

All three candidates running in the March 5, 2024, Democratic primary for Texas House of Representatives District 115 — Scarlett Cornwallis (D), Cassandra Garcia Hernandez (D), and Kate Rumsey (D) — completed Ballotpedia’s Candidate Connection survey. These survey responses allow voters to hear directly from candidates about what motivates them to run for office.

Here are the candidates’ responses to the question: What are the main points you want voters to remember about your goals for your time in office?

Cornwallis:

  • “Advocate for green initiatives, addressing climate change, and promoting renewable energy in Texas. My focus includes reducing the carbon footprint, creating jobs in sustainable energy, and preserving natural landscapes. I aim to revolutionize public transportation, pushing for increased state funding and partnerships to modernize systems …
  • Advocate for fully funded public education, prioritizing increased funding, and resources for quality education. Support measures like early childhood education, smaller class sizes, and improved teacher salaries. For public safety, endorse responsible firearm ownership …
  • Prioritize economic growth by supporting local businesses, securing federal grants, and managing community spending. Advocate for quality education, healthcare, and social services, ensuring grant funding for equal opportunities. Support a living wage through policies that raise the minimum wage and assist small businesses with tax incentives. Address the rising cost of prescription drugs …”

Hernandez:

  • “I have the experience necessary to be a successful legislator – and I don’t require any training once I’m in office. I have already done work previously at the Capitol to move legislation.
  • From my previous experiences, I have the relatonships necessary with other members of the Texas Legislature and associated stakeholders – in Austin, locally, and beyond to provide resources and opportunities to HD115 and work on meaningful legislation.
  • My community involvement over the years – in a varity of backgrounds and areas – enables me to reach every part of HD115 and know what matters to us all.”

Rumsey:

  • “I am the hometown candidate in this race. I grew up Carrolton, lived in Irving and now live in Coppell. I have seen where this community has been and look forward to helping this community in the future. I have a deep love for this area and returned here to raise my family.
  • I have the real life experience on issues that are affecting our community: gun safety, fentanyl overdoses, and public corruption. I’ve personally spoken with fentanyl dealers and taken thousands of deadly pills off the streets. I’ve learned how firearms are made and sold to the cartels. I have also stood up to public officials who use their office for personal gain. …
  • Finally, i have spent most of my life as a public servant – a DOJ prosecutor, an Air Force office, and a military spouse. My husband and I both took oaths of office to the Constitution, which embodies our democracy, an oath we take seriously.”
