Riot Games originally intended to release League of Legends with just 20 unique champions, but eventually doubled that number leading up to launch day on Oct. 27, 2009. Now, 17 years later, there are a whopping 172 playable characters in the game.
Zaahen, a fallen god-warrior who wields both divine and profane power, is the latest member of the League family that arrived in 2025, defying the dark corruption that once drove him to lock himself away inside his own weapon.
Before his release, Yunara, a marksman from the spirit realm who spent centuries honing her skills with a legendary Kinkou relic, made her debut in July 2025. Yunara herself was preceded by Mel Medarda (Champion 170) in January 2025, and Ambessa, the Matriarch of War (Champion 169), who arrived earlier in November 2024.
When I first played League in season one, I never imagined the champion roster would reach 100, let alone 171 (I was a Poppy one-trick pony, by the way). This just goes to show the longevity of the game throughout the years. Despite its ups and downs, it’s still going strong over a decade later, bringing in millions of players every month.
