Alison Hammond demands free heating for those in need: 'No one should be cold'

Alison Hammond has urged for the government to rethink its energy bills hike in a passionate speech demanding free heating for those in need.

The mother-of-one was hosting Friday's This Morning with Dermot O'Leary when they invited Gyles Brandreth and Nicola Thorp onto the show to discuss the latest headlines.

The conversation turned to reports that energy bills could increase by £53 a month, plunging many Brits into debt.

Responding to the price rises in the Commons on Thursday, Rishi Sunak announced that people in Council Tax bands A to D would get a £150 rebate to help with the price hikes.

Other measures include a £200 pound on electricity bills for all households to be repaid over five years.

Alison wasn't happy with this and said: "People can't pay it back, there should be something where you get it for free, it's as simple as that.

"If you're on low income or if you live in houses that are low grade... see, I should be Prime Minister.

"No one should be paying anything back and no one should be cold," she added.

Gyles then said: "The truth is Rishi Sunak realises that this is the number one issue this year, the Bank of England saying people's incomes will fall in real terms by about two per cent this year with this business and inflation as well, so what is the answer?"

Alison quickly replied: "I've got the answer: put your heating on, keep nice and warm.

"No one's gonna put us all in prison, put your heating on, if you can't pay it, you can't pay it!"

"Go Hammond!" Dermot replied, before suggesting: "Surely the answer is somehow to means test this."

"When you get those big bills, just ignore!" Alison then advised, however some viewers weren't impressed with her comments.

"Whilst I appreciate Alison’s advise not to pay your energy bill if you can’t afford it, when they cut you off, you are no longer laughing. #thismorning," one person said.

This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV and ITV Hub.
