The footage, which quickly went viral online, was published on May 8, 2026, as part of a broader transparency initiative launched under President Donald Trump. The program, officially called PURSUE — short for Presidential Unsealing and Reporting System for UAP Encounters — aims to release previously classified files related to unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAPs), more commonly known as UFOs.
Among dozens of declassified clips, one particular recording captured widespread attention. The grainy video, officially catalogued as DOW-UAP-PR38 by the US government’s All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO), appears to show an eight-pointed star-shaped object darting erratically through the sky.
What Does the Video Show?
According to official records, the footage was captured on January 1, 2013, by an infrared sensor mounted aboard a US military platform operating in the Middle East.
Unlike ordinary cameras, infrared sensors detect heat rather than visible light. Hot objects appear bright against cooler backgrounds, giving the footage its eerie monochrome appearance.
Roughly ten seconds into the clip, the camera zooms in on the unidentified object. The glowing figure then appears to drift unpredictably across the frame, leaving behind a visible trail before disappearing from view. After what seems to be a cut in the footage, the object reappears and exits again from another direction.
Notably, officials released no eyewitness testimony, radar tracking, or additional sensor data alongside the video. As a result, the case remains officially “unresolved.”
Is It Evidence of Alien Life?
Despite online speculation linking the footage to extraterrestrial activity, experts and government investigators remain unconvinced.
One of the most widely accepted scientific explanations suggests the object was likely a military parachute illumination flare. Such flares are commonly used in military operations and conflict zones to light up large areas during nighttime missions.
These flares burn at extremely high temperatures and descend slowly while suspended beneath small parachutes. When viewed through infrared imaging systems, they can produce bright starburst-like patterns that closely resemble the shape seen in the released footage.
Investigators also note that wind movement can cause such flares to drift unpredictably, creating the illusion of unusual aerial maneuvers.
AARO Maintains No Proof of Extraterrestrials
The All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office has repeatedly emphasized that, despite reviewing thousands of UAP reports over the years, it has found no verified evidence of alien spacecraft or extraterrestrial technology.
Most investigated sightings have ultimately been attributed to drones, weather balloons, optical illusions, sensor malfunctions, or military-related objects.
While the newly released footage has fueled renewed public curiosity and conspiracy theories online, officials continue to caution against jumping to conclusions without supporting evidence.
For now, the mysterious “star-shaped UFO” appears to be less a sign of alien visitors and more another example of how military technology and infrared imaging can create puzzling visual phenomena.
