Alicia Vikander's pain after suffering miscarriage before welcoming first child with Michael Fassbender

Michael Fassbender’s wife Alicia Vikander has told of her pain after suffering a miscarriage.

The Tomb Raider star welcomed her first child with the Kerry actor in 2021.

But 33-year-old Alicia has revealed she previously suffered a miscarriage before welcoming their baby.

She said: “We have a child now, but it took us time.”

Alicia stars in the new Sky Atlantic TV show Irma Vep playing a pop star who is forced to go back on stage shortly after suffering a miscarriage.

The actress said addressing such painful issues on screen helps her deal with her own grief.

She also compared her experiences to her 2016 movie The Light Between Oceans in which she starred opposite Michael playing a childless couple who adopt a baby girl who is lost at sea.

Alicia added: “(The miscarriage) was so extreme, painful to go through and, of course, it made me recall making that film [The Light Between Oceans]. That film has another meaning now.,” she told The Times.

“Sometimes you go through things that are tough in life and if you have an office job you can step away for a bit.

“But there are times that myself or colleagues have been through something and, well, I can't understand how they went on to the red carpet afterwards. To be met by people asking, 'How are you doing?' Given what they had just been through? Most people would not be able to step out of their house.”

Michael and Alicia tied the knot in October 2017 - three years after they began dating after they met on set of The Light Between Oceans.

She has avoided discussing her and Michael's child publicly - or revealing their name or sex - but in a recent interview with Harper's Bazaar, the Oscar-winning star opened up about motherhood, stating she always puts her “little family” first.

She said: “In my little family, with my husband and my child, we travel together, always. That's the rule. We do jobs so one of us can always be with the baby.”

She said she felt lonely being famous.

“When, in other people’s eyes, I was at my height of fame, I was the most sad. I kept telling myself, ‘Take it in. It is incredible.’ But I didn’t know what to do. There were all these first-class flights, five-star rooms. But I was always by myself.

“It was very lonely,” she said. “If I didn’t have my friends to call, it would have been difficult. I’ve seen what can happen to people in my industry.”

Alicia and Michael, who live in Lisbon, Portugal, are known for being notoriously private and hadn't previously spoken about whether they would have children together.

She also previously discussed her fertility battle during the candid interview, telling the magazine: “I tried to get pregnant for a while. So I had tough times during lockdown. I struggled for a while.

“For a while I didn't think that I could get pregnant... “

She added she decided to talk about her issues to help other women going through similar experiences.

Alicia added: “'I kind of stopped and thought, 'Am I going to talk about this?' But I think it's universal and so many women go through similar things. And it's tough.”
