A 28-year-old man suspected of attempted robbery is in hospital after trying to resist police in Alice Springs, say Northern Territory police.
In a statement, NT police said that officers had attended the man's home address in Alice Springs after he was identified on CCTV allegedly trying to steal clothing from a shop in the town's CBD on Saturday morning.
Police said the business owner managed to stop the thief and was allegedly assaulted.
When police arrived at the man's home address, he allegedly tried to escape arrest by barricading himself in a bathroom after throwing glass items at the officers.
While in the bathroom, police said, the offender allegedly smashed a window and sliced an artery near his wrist.
Police said officers then forced their way into the bathroom, where a struggle broke out and an officer tasered the man.
After applying first aid, police said, they took the man to the Alice Springs hospital, where he remains in a stable condition.
NT Police confirmed the arrest was being treated as a Serious Custody Incident.
The incident comes amid a surge in crime and anti-social behaviour in Alice Springs that has attracted national attention and prompted new alcohol restrictions.
