Ali's Kitchen in Boston Spa review: Curry house disappointingly serves up over-cooked and meagre dishes

We ordered food from Ali's Kitchen Restaurant and Takeaway in Boston Spa, after seeing positive reviews online for the village curry house. Unfortunately, the takeaway didn't meet our expectations with small dishes and over-cooked food.

The curry house on High Street offered a wide variety of dishes. First we went for the poppadum which was crispy but nothing special and the mint sauce was just awful. The sauce was plain white and had barely any flavour.

The chicken tandoori starter was a disappointment. It looked like a baked potato, just a mound of brown chicken meat garnished with some onions. It was utterly dry and not enjoyable to eat whatsoever.

The onion bhaji came as three small fried balls, each had a delicate taste with the desired crunch and moist centre but were quite oily, I’ve had better.

I was faced with further disappointment upon opening the saag bhaji. I’d paid over £3 for a speck of kale dumped into the corner of the box. I felt utterly really short-changed by the meagre side dish.

The naan was also a let down. It had a tough texture and got cold very fast on the short journey home.

The other dishes almost made up for the prior disappointment. The tarka daal was really fantastic. It was a vibrant yellow and just bursting with aromatic flavour.

The Kashmiri rice, which is rice made with nuts and dried fruits, was absolutely stunning. Lovely yellow tint the grains of rice, with a mix of vegetables making the side dish even more colourful. Plus it was generously portioned.

The pathia lamb tikka was full of aromatic flavour, sweet, sour with soft delicate chunks of meat. The curse had a piquant edge. It was generously portioned, to the extent where I even had enough to eat the following day.

I didn't feel the rice dish or the main course of curry made up for the shortcomings throughout the rest of the meal however. I felt this was a real shame as so many of the dishes showed such promise.
