Algeria’s Tebboune Hails ‘Relationship of Trust’ with France

Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune welcomed the new "relationships of trust" between France and Algeria and his personal "mutual friendship" with President Emmanuel Macron.

In an interview with Le Figaro, Tebboune expressed his wishes for a "new era" with France six months after Macron visited Algiers.

He announced that he would make a state visit to France in 2023.

Regarding his "understanding" with Macron, he said: "Yes, we have a certain complicity, and I see in him the embodiment of a new generation that can save relations between the two countries."

"France must free itself from its colonizer complex and Algeria from its colonized complex. Algeria is an African power that no longer resembles what it was in 1962," he added.

Last week, Tebboune said his country and France were looking for calm, stressing that his relationship with Macron was "very good."

Paris and Algiers had sought to improve their relations during a visit by Macron to the North African country in August. The two presidents declared the resumption of coordination during a joint announcement.

The move paved the way to easing visa restrictions on Algeria while Algiers increased its cooperation in fighting illegal immigration.

Relations between Algiers and Paris grew strained in September 2021 when the latter decided to reduce the number of entry visas granted to nationals from Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia to pressure the countries to take back their citizens living illegally in France.

The dispute was settled around two weeks ago when French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin announced that Paris had resolved visa issues with Algeria.
