German tennis player Alexander Zverev is set to face trial starting May 31 on charges of allegedly assaulting his ex-girlfriend in 2020.
Currently competing in the Australian Open, the 26-year-old player had previously appealed a 450,000 euro fine ($475,300) imposed on him in October related to the assault case.
The Berlin court announced on Monday that Zverev, a former world number two, is not required to appear in court personally. His legal representation will handle the proceedings during the eight planned hearings.
He is accused of "physically abusing a woman and damaging her health during an argument", according to the court.
The plaintiff remained unnamed by the court, but Zverev's defense had identified her as Brenda Patea in October.
Zverev maintains his innocence and denies the allegations.
In January 2023, the ATP, governing the men's tennis tour, concluded an investigation into claims of domestic abuse involving Zverev and a female tennis player, citing insufficient evidence.
The ATP initiated the investigation in October 2021 following allegations made by Zverev's former girlfriend, Olya Sharypova.
