Alexander Zverev apologized Wednesday after getting ejected from the Mexican Open for his all-time tennis tantrum.
After losing a doubles match in Acapulco, Zverev walked over to the umpire’s chair and began smacking it with his racket. The umpire was in the chair for the first set of blows before walking away.
“You f---ing destroyed the whole f---ing match,” the German screamed in English.
Zverev, the defending champion in the singles tournament, was banned from the rest of the draw after the meltdown.
Olga Sharypova, a tennis player and Zverev’s ex-girlfriend, has repeatedly accused Zverev of physically abusing her when they were dating in 2019.
Zverev apologized Wednesday for going wild on the chair. “I have privately apologized to the chair umpire because my outburst towards him was wrong and unacceptable, and I am only disappointed in myself.” He implied that his real crime was being too passionate.
“As you know, I leave everything on the court. Yesterday, I left too much.”
