Alexander Isak lifts lid on fitness status after Eddie Howe explains Newcastle demand

Alexander Isak admits there is much more to come from him in a Newcastle United shirt and insists he can get even sharper in the last 13 matches of the season.

Isak missed a big chunk of the season after suffering a muscle injury last September but has fought his way back to fitness. Despite his early season troubles, he has now netted four Premier League goals in just six starts.

After the game, Eddie Howe clarified his remarks at Friday's press conference when he spoke about Isak not playing 90 minutes regularly. On Sunday he wanted to make it clear what he meant by his comments and said: "I need to clear this up. It was fit to play 90 minutes how I want him to play – and how I demand from my players."

Isak accepts that he can be even fitter for the Magpies. Asked about the situation, Isak told Chronicle Live: "I don't know. Obviously, I can get fitter but you don't always have to play 90 minutes.

"I think against Wolves I played almost 70 minutes. I emptied myself, that's enough then you get fresh legs coming in and have an impact like they did on Sunday. That is something that we have in this team. "It's really important."

When asked if the lack of 90 minute run outs was down to a fear of recurring muscle injuries, Isak added: "No, I feel confident. I think I get fitter, and I feel good when I am on there, I don't think I have any troubles. I just keep on working really."

Isak has had to wait for his chance under Howe in recent weeks but it was Callum Wilson who was benched on Sunday in the 2-1 win against Wolves. Speaking about his motivation the Sweden international said :"It's the same for everybody. It is about how you take it (not playing).

"I have used it as fuel and tried to be ready. I am happy with myself."

Isak's goal at the Gallowgate End delighted fans but he stated after the game it was a moment overdue. The striker said: "I enjoyed being back on the scoresheet in front of our fans. I'm not used to scoring headers.

"It's been an area I can improve so that was a good one. We have played well but everyone knows the ball hasn't gone in the back of the net. We have shown great character to stay in the game and go on and score the winner."
