Alex Scott disagrees with Karen Carney as ex-England stars make Women's Euro 2022 predictions

Former and current international footballers and managers have had their say on who will be crowned Women's Euro 2022 champions.

The tournament kicks off with host nation England facing Austria on Wednesday night in front of a sold-out Old Trafford crowd and with home advantage, the Lionesses will be expected to get off to a winning start.

Placed in a somewhat favourable Group A alongside Northern Ireland and Norway, should they successfully qualify to the knockout stages they will be seen as one of favourites for the competition.

With that being said, a number of international managers and players, past and present, have given their opinions on who will lift the European Championship trophy on July 31 at Wembley Stadium.

Former England manager Hope Powell: England

"I expect England to win it," former England boss Powell said. "It will not be easy. You can't exclude Germany - they are used to winning tournaments.

"Spain, everyone expects them to be there or there about. Then the French who will also have high expectations, although they seem to crumble a bit in the latter stages of tournaments. If they've ironed that out, they've got a chance.

"I also believe it's about a bit of luck. What group you're in, what's your pathway, you need a bit of luck in tournament play. But I believe England have a realistic chance. If they can take the luck and run with it, brilliant."

Former Everton manager Willie Kirk: England

"I think their strength in depth is at a level like never before. Any starting XI from that squad would be a match for most countries and I'm sure Sarina Wiegman will get her selection and tactics right for each match and challenge."

Former England full-back Alex Scott: England

"I honestly believe that England are going to win the Euros. They are on home soil, have talented players and a new manager. I think it's all there for England to win."

Arsenal manager Jonas Eidevall: Spain

"Spain have an excellent team. They have excellent relationships with each other, and a lot of players from Barcelona, who are used to winning a lot of trophies. They were very good in the last World Cup and were unlucky to be knocked out by the USA."

Former England midfielder Fara Williams: England

"England are in good form, have a fantastic manager and will have the home support. They have just won the Arnold Clark Cup against strong nations, Sarina Wiegman has won the tournament before as Netherlands manager and has certainly changed England's mentality. They have so many young, talented players."

Former England winger Sue Smith: England

"I think the home tournament will bring pressure but may also give them the extra boost needed, especially in the latter stages. England are capable of beating anyone. They have a top manager who knows how to win a home Euros and a competitive squad with a nice balance of exciting, young talent and experience."

Former England midfielder Karen Carney: Sweden

"When you take bronze at the World Cup and silver at the Olympics, you are on a trajectory. Sweden are the most complete team in all areas, they are mentally strong and have an experienced squad.

Former England defender Anita Asante: England

"This is a fantastic opportunity for England to reach a European final with huge support from a home crowd, but also they have so much depth and cover in every position. I can see France joining England in the final if they get a good run of form because they have equally strong threats in attack. Tough shout, but England to win."
