Alex Gogic shines for Cyprus as St Mirren contract offer remains on the table

Alex Gogic shone at the back for Cyprus against Northern Ireland as he continues to weigh up a contract offer from St Mirren.

The former Hibs midfielder has played in both of his country’s opening Nations League clashes, including Sunday’s goalless draw in Larnaca where he starred in the centre of defence.

The 28-year-old, who has now moved into double figure caps for Cyprus, was released by Hibs at the end of last season having spent the second half of the campaign on loan in Paisley.

He quickly became a firm fan favourite, with boss Stephen Robinson making him an offer to try and tempt him to stay with the Buddies.

Gogic has yet to confirm whether or not he will stay in Scotland, having previously intimated a desire to return to his native Cyprus with his family.

It remains to be seen if he’ll be back in the black and white stripes come the start of pre-season at the end of this month.

Also in international action over the weekend was Saints striker Alex Greive.

The 23-year-old played in an unfamiliar role at the top of a midfield diamond for New Zealand against Peru in a friendly in Barcelona.

He almost opened the scoring at the end of the first half with a stinging drive, before a late goalkeeping howler saw Peru clinch a narrow 1-0 win.

New Buddies goalkeeper Trevor Carson was an unused substitute for Nothern Ireland in their clash against Cyprus, while elsewhere St Mirren winger Jay Henderson was also left on the bench as Scotland’s Under-21 side picked up a very creditable 0-0 draw away against Belgium.
