Aleksander Ceferin fires back at Gianni Infantino after Fifa accuse Uefa of ‘harassment’

  • Uefa president Aleksander Ceferin strongly criticised Fifa president Gianni Infantino during a speech in Copenhagen, comparing his leadership to 'The Emperor's New Clothes' and urging European clubs to withdraw their support over Infantino's secretive plan to introduce private investors into a World Cup commercial deal.
  • Ceferin highlighted Fifa's handling of striker Folarin Balogun's suspended one-match ban after an intervention from US president Donald Trump, questioning how many governance breaches clubs would accept before saying 'enough'.
  • La Liga president Javier Tebas labelled the reversal of Balogun's ban following Donald Trump's phone call as “the most serious incident in the history of football”, calling for an immediate overhaul of Fifa's governance model.
  • Uefa has warned it will seek a credible candidate to stand against Infantino in next year's Fifa presidential election ahead of the 18 November candidacy deadline.
  • EFC chairman Nasser Al-Khelaifi lamented the conflict and called for honesty and transparency after Fifa accused Uefa of “harassment” following legal efforts by Uefa to force disclosure on the private investment project.
