Aldi to include signs and symptoms of bowel cancer on toilet roll packaging from autumn

Aldi Ireland have announced plans to include symptoms of bowel cancer on the packaging of toilet roll, in a bid to raise awareness of the disease.

It comes as part of a partnership with the Irish Cancer Society, who say that almost 2,700 people are diagnosed with bowel cancer each year.

A statement from the company said that Aldi hopes to raise awareness with this move, which is a “first for the Irish market”.

Toilet roll sold in Aldi will now have the signs and symptoms of bowel cancer on their packaging. A QR code will also be available to redirect people to more information.

Bowel cancer is one of the most common types of cancers found in Ireland, according to a statement from Aldi.

“Recent research from the Irish Cancer Society shows almost one in every two people are not confident when it comes to spotting early signs of bowel cancer,” the statement said.

Symptoms of bowel cancer include changes in toilet habits and blood in your stool.

The statement from Aldi said: “Knowing the symptoms to look out for, and acting on them, can lead to bowel cancer being diagnosed at an earlier stage when it is easier to treat and even curable.”

Group Buying Director of Aldi Ireland, John Curtin, said: “By outlining the key warning signs of bowel cancer on our packaging, we hope to reach as many people as possible and further make a difference through our work with the Irish Cancer Society.

Phil Harford, Daffodil Centre Nurse at the Irish Cancer Society, added: “Bowel cancer is treatable and curable especially if diagnosed early so it's important to check your bowel health and know the signs and symptoms of bowel cancer.

“Early detection can save lives, so visit your GP if you have any worries or concerns and take part in BowelScreen when you are invited to do so.”

“Spotting signs early is so important, so anything we can do to raise awareness of what people should look out for is crucial.”

The new packaging will be available on Aldi’s entire range of toilet rolls from this autumn.
