Aldi supermarket axe car park spaces to make way for reverse recycling vending machine

Aldi are axing four car park spaces at an Ayrshire store to make way for a recycling machine.

The German supermarket giant have wiped out four spaces at their Kilmarnock shop to install the reverse vending machine.

The machine is understood to be for the Deposit Return Scheme which is set to come into force in Scotland on August 16, 2023.

In November 2021, Aldi trialed the scheme in Bathgate with customers given Aldi vouchers worth £0.10 for each item they deposit, up to a maximum of £5.

During the trial, customers are encouraged to return single-use PET plastic or glass bottles from 50ml up to three litres, and aluminum drinks cans.

As part of the trial, Aldi bosses said they'd gather key insights in preparation for the radical recycling scheme.

Work is currently taking place to install the machine with where parent and child spaces are at the front of the store on West Netherton Street.

Broadly, the deposit return scheme states that people pay a small deposit of 20p when they buy a drink in a single-use container and then get the deposit back when they return the empty bottle or can.

Aldi was granted permission to erect the new structure by East Ayrshire Council in July 2020 and recently applied for permission to place vinyl on the front and side of the recycling centre.
