With the cost of almost everything on the rise, many households across Ireland are struggling to pay their bills, with some left strapped for cash while out shopping.
An Aldi shopper was left speechless when she heard a cashier's reply to an elderly woman who was left €1 short at the tills.
The heartwarming encounter took the customer aback and she shared it on social media to let more people hear about it.

Rone Bouwer Baxendell told how the OAP appeared to keep tabs on her shopping total as the items were scanned through the till.
When she came up short, the Aldi worker stepped in to help and offered to pay the remainder, Manchester Evening News reports.
Rone said: "Today at my local Aldi in Towcester, there was an elderly lady in front of me, keep checking how much she’s spending…long story short, the amount came to over what she had and asked for certain items to be credited off.
"The Aldi cashier turned around and said it’s only £1 (€1.15) something over, I’ll pay it for you.
"When it was my turn I said what a lovely thing to do and the reply was…we are all battling at the moment and we need to eat. You want to know why my Aldi is special and why I go there…this is why."
Many people took the comments to respond to the act of kindness.
One person said: "We do this at work too sadly it is becoming more regular and it is heart breaking we actually had an elderly customer a couple of weeks ago in tears as the price of eggs had gone up and she couldn't afford half a dozen eggs another customer bought them for her and then brought it to our attention, there are many angels out there and trust me we can tell the fraudsters."
Another added: "I’ve had a cashier pay what I couldn’t once before. Not many people like that around anymore. There are a few good people out there."
A third pointed out: "That was a very nice thing for that cashier to do and I applaud her for it. But, that was the lady doing that kindness not Aldi."
Someone else wrote: "That's so kind of the cashier we are all finding it hard at the moment well done Aldi."
A fifth added: "Great to know there is such kindness about."
