Aldi is planning to open 40 new stores over 2023, with two new stores in the Edinburgh area included in plans.
The popular budhet supermarket is planning to invest more than £400 million to in-store development, reports the Mirror. Aldi currently has more than 990 stores throughout the UK, but the new target is to have 1,200 stores open. The supermarket are on the lookout for sites to open the new shops - and will pay a 'finder's fee' to those who recommend them.
Edinburgh has been included in this UK-wide search for new stores, with the Drylaw area of the city a potential new location as well as Bonnyrigg in Midlothian. Aldi confirmed they were looking for freehold town centre or edge-of-town sites that are around 1.5 acres. The location must be able to accommodate a 20,000 square foot store, with around 100 parking spaces.

Other idealistic additions include being near a main road with good visibility and access. Aldi is also offering a finder's fee for agents who recommend a location, which is either 1.5 per cent of a freehold price or 10 per cent of the first year’s rent for leasehold sites.
The supermarket has also released a contact address for people who want to recommend a site that they feel fit the requirements. The email address is linked here.
Giles Hurley, CEO at Aldi UK, said: “Demand for Aldi has never been higher here are still some towns and areas that either don’t have access to an Aldi or have the capacity for additional stores.
“To meet that demand, we need to open more stores and it’s our mission to keep driving our ambitious expansion plan to achieve that.”
Aldi's plan for 40 new stores this year is set to create around 6,000 new jobs in the UK. The supermarket has also pledged to almost double its 60-strong estate within the M25 and create around 2,400 jobs.
