Aldi's 89p takeaway 'dupe' could save households hundreds of pounds each year

Aldi has launched an "amazing" new item that customers say could save them hundreds of pounds each year.

The supermarket giant has built a following by creating dupes from popular brands like M&S, Domino's and Lurpak, and its newest addition is no exception. It has gone down particularly well with families looking for quick and easy ways to help them save on their food bills.

Aldi's latest dupe offers a chance to make "fake" Subway sandwiches for far less money than the real thing, according to a number of shoppers. The supermarket is stocking an 89p range of "Metro" bread rolls that are a dead-ringer for the Subway favourites even down to the green, white and yellow packaging.

Eagle-eyed shopper Nicola Atkinson revealed the trick in the Extreme Couponing and Bargains Facebook group, the MEN reports. Describing them as "Subway dupe bread rolls", she pointed out that the range matches Subway's, with cheese and herb, wholegrain and Italian-style options on offer.

Her post quickly went viral as shoppers shared ideas for creating the perfect home "Subway" experience. Tricia Brewis commented: "Can do a cheat Subway." Dani Robinson added: "Oh yes, this is definitely going on the meal plan next week. I love Subway."

Gemma Alemdaroğlu said: "We can make our own subways, just need to buy the sauces."

An average 6-inch Subway tuna sandwich costs £4.99. The Aldi bread rolls cost 45p each - while a tin of tuna is 66p. To make a fake Subway at home with these ingredients it would cost little over £1 - depending on what toppings you want, of course.

That makes a saving of £4 each time. That said, if you were to make the switch regularly, your family could potentially save £100s every year.
