Aldi rolls out major change to more stores - and shoppers are in two minds

Aldi has installed self-service checkouts at several more of its supermarkets - and shoppers are divided.

The systems first arrived at some Aldi stores last year.

One shopper posted in the Aldi fan group with over 270,000 members on Facebook about self-service checkouts in her local store.

She said: "Just been to Hednesford Aldi, the self service checkouts are a win win for me!"

The post was flooded with comments from shoppers sharing their thoughts on the new tills.

One person agreed: "Just had them installed in my local Aldi, they are great."

And a second fan wrote: "Yeah absolutely, especially if you're only popping in for a few bits."

A third person said: "Game changer for when you have a few things, use to put me off popping by before, having to wait in long normal till queue."

And another commented: "Our little Aldi has taken all the tills out and only has self-scan, its brilliant!!

“No ques [sic] at all, can scan at your own speed and I've not been over charged once!"

Others complained that the self-service checkouts were too difficult for shoppers who aren't tech-savvy to use.

One said: "Don't like them, so refuse to use them. Soon there will be no check-out tills if people are happy to use them self-checkouts."

Another person commented: "Bet you're young and you understand them. I'm old and I do not."

Someone else wrote: "I get too flustered and just make mistakes... tech is not my thing."

An Aldi spokesperson told Birmingham Live: "Following positive feedback, we are introducing self-checkouts across the county to further improve customer experience.

“Checkouts manned by our amazing colleagues will still be available for customers who prefer to use these."

The news comes after Aldi made a major packaging change to its stores.

The supermarket has removed all of the glass and metal components from the pumps - which means the entire packaging is able to be fully recycled in the UK.

As a result of the change, Aldi could save over 200 tonnes of packaging material going to landfills a year.
