After recent price hikes in food shopping many question what supermarket is actually the best value for basics.
The Mirror compared eight top chains to see which is best on the cheapest versions of 20 essential items and looked at the cost of the best value basics. The supermarkets include: Tesco, Asda, Morrisons, Sainsbury's, M&S, Aldi, Iceland and Waitrose and Parters.
The comparison included: Long grain white rice, potatoes, chopped tomatoes, baked beans, white bread, carrots, British steak mince, chicken breast fillets, onions, salted British butter, salad peppers, bananas, penne pasta, toilet rolls, tuna chunks in brine, cornflakes, mature cheddar, medium eggs and easy peelers clementines.

Aldi's products came in at £25.14 being the cheapest of the eight chains as is offered the cheapest price for 14 of the compared items. Tesco was runner up for the cheapest supermarket at £27.00 offering 12 items for the cheapest price.
According to the Mirror's comparison Tesco sells the cheapest 950g of chicken breast fillets at £5.80. This is 29p cheaper than Aldi.
M&S topped the rankings at £41.70 offering no items cheaper than the other supermarkets. Waitrose also didn't offer any of the cheapest goods but they were priced at a much lower price of £36.04.
Runner up as the most expensive for best value basics was Iceland charging £40.38 offering only milk at the cheapest price.
