Britain’s fourth largest supermarket Aldi is to ramp up hiring with a festive recruitment drive set to create 3,000 jobs as a “growing number of customers” switch to the retailer as the cost of living crisis bites.

The supermarket will look to fill over 2,000 temporary and permanent Christmas store positions to help replenish stock and provide additional assistance to customers during the busiest period in the Aldi calendar.

In addition, Aldi will create a recruitment drive to attempt to attract more than 850 roles across its 11 regional distribution centres around the UK including locations in Chelmsford, Swindon and Sheppey.

Positions available at the centres will include warehouse selectors, logistics assistants and lorry drivers.

Kelly Stokes, recruitment director at Aldi UK, said: “This year we’re recruiting more people than ever over the Christmas period to support the growing number of customers that are switching to Aldi.

“That includes a mix of temporary and permanent positions, as well as looking to fill both in-store roles and positions at our regional distribution centres.

“Our amazing colleagues play a vital role in keeping our shelves stocked year-round which is why, once again, we’ll also be keeping our stores closed on Boxing Day as a thank you for all of their hard work.”

The retailer recently became Britain’s fourth largest supermarket leapfrogging Morrisons to take its place alongside Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Asda.

Aldi also announced it was upping worker pay in July, with London workers at the budget supermarket chain receiving £11.95 an hour, up from £11.55, above the Living Wage Foundation’s recommended “real living wage” of £11.05 in the capital.

Outside London, the hourly rate went up to £10.50 from £10.10 last month.
