Brian Reid insists his Albion Rovers side have played better and lost this season after finally picking up their first win in League Two with a comfortable victory at newly promoted Bonnyrigg Rose.
The Cliftonhill gaffer had lamented his side’s luck so far this season after a run of three straight defeats left them rock bottom, despite some strong showings.
But that all changed on Saturday when a Jonathan Stewart own goal after 22 minutes and a Charlie Reilly strike five minutes from time got Rovers up and running in the division.
Reid reckoned it was no less than his team deserved at New Dundas Park, but admitted it was far from their best display.
He said: “It’s just important to win games. We said we were playing well without doing that in recent games, so it was due to turn for us and it did.
“But we’ve played better and lost this season. I felt we played okay on Saturday but I feel we can play better, and that’s no disrespect to Bonnyrigg.
“My goalkeeper hasn’t had much to do during the game and that’s credit to the rest of the boys in the team. We deserve more points than we have so far so it was just good to get the three points on Saturday.
“We have a decent team here and we need to make sure we kick on from this and build on it. There is no point getting that first win and slipping back in the next game.
“It was a good result at a difficult place so we are delighted with that, but we won’t get carried away.”
A big bonus for Reid was the return of forward Michael Paton, who featured for the first time since picking up a knock in their opening day defeat to Stenhousemuir on July 30.
”Paton is an experienced player and he is pivotal in terms of what we are trying to do,” said Reid.
”He holds the ball up well, he links the play and he’s a clever player.
“We’ve obviously missed him so it’s good to have him back and hopefully he is over the wee niggle he’s had.
“He had a great chance to kill the game early in the second half when he went round the goalkeeper. He was probably a wee bit ring rusty after coming back from injury, but he knows he should probably score there.
“It was a comfortable 2-0 win in the end. We are pleased to get off the mark.
“We have a tough game at home to Annan now and we need to be fully focused on that now to get another result.
“That was the first time in a long while we’ve had a full squad to choose from so fingers crossed that continues.”
