Albion Rovers hero Callum Wilson knew rocket shot would hit the net

Albion Rovers hero Callum Wilson knew as soon as it left his boot that his rocket shot was destined for the top corner, but says it was still a brilliant feeling to see it hit.

The midfielder’s third goal of the season won the game 1-0 for Rover against Stranraer, giving the Coatbridge club back-to-back wins and moving them up to seventh in League One.

It also stretched their unbeaten run to six games, and the 23-year-old says they’re full of confidence.

“I think that’s one of my best ones,” he said. “As soon as I hit it I knew I had a chance, but it was lovely to see it nestling in the net.

“I felt like it was a good spell for us, for the last five minutes we were really attacking them, playing football in their half, so it was nice for the goal to come.

“I felt the first half was reasonably even, maybe slightly to them, but in the second half we put on a lot of pressure.

“When you get that goal it settles you a little bit, and we did well to see it out.

“There have been a few games where we’ve been ahead with five minutes to play and we haven’t seen it out, so it shows good resilience and I’m glad we managed to get the win.”

Though the win moves Rovers up to seventh, Wilson would like to see them climb higher, but acknowledges that they’re playing well.

He said: “We’re playing some good stuff and I feel confident every time I go out on the pitch, but we need to keep building on it.

“We’re still no exactly where we want to be, but we’re starting to play a lot better football, so that’s good.

“If we can keep winning games – and you’ve seen what one, two or three wins does in this league – you start moving towards the top.

“The last two wins show that we can compete with teams towards the top, but I don’t think there's much between any teams in this league.

“We’ve shown that with draws against top teams and beating East Fife.

“If we keep going and we keep winning games, we’ve got a chance to push towards the higher end of the table.”

Rovers now turn their attention to the Scottish Cup, with Lowland League side University of Stirling visiting Cliftonhill next weekend.

Wilson said: “We’re doing well in the league, so you want to keep doing that, but the Scottish Cup’s important as well and it’s going to be a tough game.

“But if you win that it keeps the momentum going, so just keep winning games, that’s what we need to do.

“I think everyone wants to be in that next round, but they’re a good team and they’re doing well in the Lowland League.

“We need to prepare right and we need to play the way we’re playing.”
