Albion Rovers boss urges side to turn draws into wins, after costly late leveller

Albion Rovers boss Brian Reid has urged his side to start turning draws into wins as they bid to climb League Two.

Rovers were twice ahead against high-flying Stenhousemuir, with Jamie Leslie opening the scoring just ahead of the interval, and Callum Wilson restoring their lead after Will Sewell had levelled in 70 minutes.

But a “harsh” penalty and red card for a Ewan Wilson hand-ball led to Ross Forbes equalising from the spot with three minutes left,

Reid says VAR in the top-flight might have prevented his side from dropping two points, but says they would be mid-table if they had held on for wins in games they’ve drawn.

He said: “It was two points lost, we were the better team throughout the game, dominated, and created more chances, but two moments of slackness cost us with the two goals.

“We hit the crossbar twice, played really well, I was pleased with the performance and the players – it’s just wee moments.

“They took a quick free kick, we switched off for two seconds and the boy hits a shot. It could have hit anywhere, unfortunately it has hit Ewan’s hand, but for me I think it’s a tough one, because what else can you do when you go to block the ball and it hits your hand from two or three yards.

Reid says his side switching off at a key moment in the game cost them points (Airdrie and Coatbridge Advertiser)

“It’s a harsh one to get a penalty against you – you see in the Premiership with the VAR decisions, balls hitting people’s hands and not getting penalties against you, so it was a sore one to take.

“To compound that Ewan gets sent off as well, which is a harsh one and a double whammy out of nothing, when we were so close to getting the three points.

“I was pleased with the performance. I would obviously have rather had three points, but if we keep playing in that manner we’ll certainly win more games than we’ll lose.

“We had a chance to score a third with a great ball from Charlie Reilly to Scott Roberts, and had he slotted it away, that would have been the game done.”

Reid added: “We got a point against a team near the top of the league, but we really need to turn these points into wins, and it’s another sore one to take.

“It was similar to Annan, when we lost two points with the last kick of the ball, and if you had added these points up we could have been sitting mid-table, and in a far better position.

“So we need to turn points into wins, but at least we’re off the bottom of the table.”
