Sandy Clark hailed a ‘great team performance’ as his first victory as Albion Rovers manager hauled the club off the bottom of League Two.
Strikes from Charlie Reilly and Joe Bevan in the space of four minutes early in the second half against Elgin City sent Rovers on the road to victory, before Bevan grabbed his second of the day seven minutes from time to earn just a ninth victory this term.
It saw Rovers leapfrog Elgin and send the Borough Briggs side into the pyramid play-off spot on goal difference, although Elgin are set to play Stenhousemuir in their game in hand over Rovers tonight.
Clark was thrilled to get that maiden victory after succeeding Brian Reid late last month and said: “The most important thing was getting the three points, but it was also a really solid performance from the guys and that makes it even better.
“Having gotten to know the boys a bit now, it is no surprise to me because I know they are good enough to go and win games.
“Joe and Charlie will get the praise and that is what happens when you put the ball in the back of the net – and rightly so – but there is no doubt it was a real team performance on Saturday. From Jack Leighfield in goals to the back four, our midfielders working really hard to give the guys up front a platform to show what they can do, it was a great team performance.
“That is important and it is important we keep that standard going now.”
In a game of such huge importance, Clark was also pleased to see his players keep their cool in a pressure contest, and refuse to panic when things didn’t go their way in the opening 45 minutes.
He added: “In the first half, Elgin started the game well and they were aggressive but we worked our way into the game really well and we were unlucky not to be ahead at half-time. We had some big opportunities.
“You are always worried about getting that first goal, but when you see the quality that Charlie Reilly has got, it is not a surprise when he does really well to get us ahead.
“We backed that up with a couple of good goals from Joe and managed the game well for the rest of the match.”
