The Albany Police Department in Georgia publicly appealed for help to identify an elderly Walmart shopper after £23 ($30) dropped by another customer was picked up and kept, sparking an online row over whether 'finders keepers' can amount to a criminal offence.
Detectives released CCTV stills from the store on North Slappey Boulevard on 19 August and said the man's actions could meet the legal threshold for theft, before the cash was later returned and no charges were pursued.
