Afternoon. Anthony Albanese has warned stepping away from 2030 emissions targets would be “catastrophic”, saying he was “very confident” those targets can be met.

The prime minister was on the front foot today over the Coalition’s policy to ditch the 2030 emissions target, taking aim at Peter Dutton who he says “has never believed in taking action on climate change” and is “worse than Scott Morrison” on the issue.

Our correspondent, Daniel Hurst, writes from Canberra that the attack was notable, with Albanese “evidently feeling it’s an area of vulnerability for the Coalition in the run-up to the next federal election”.

“A lot of people out there … do great things, but don’t have a lot of money, and they’re doing great things around their own community. Why they continue to give politicians awards is beyond me. Really gets up my nose. I have to be honest with you, we get paid to do the job for you. We shouldn’t be getting awards on top of it. Full stop.” – Jacqui Lambie

The independent senator was responding to former Victorian premier Daniel Andrews being awarded a Companion of the Order of Australia.
