Alba MPs thrown out of Commons over independence referendum protest

Two pro-independence MPs have been thrown out of the Westminster chamber after a protest about indyref2.

Neale Hanvey and Kenny Macaskill were ordered to leave amid a furious row over the UK Government refusing to agree to a referendum.

The protest took place ahead of the Prime Minister’s Questions, with Speaker Lindsay Hoyle ordering the Serjeant At Arms to eject the pair.

Although their words could barely he heard on parliamentlive.tv, Hoyle's response could easily be heard:

"I will not tolerate such behaviour. Either shut up or get out."

He then noted there were "two at once" and said: "Out, now."

MacAskill said afterwards: "It's a democratic outrage. We have a mandate for a referendum in Scotland."

Chris McEleny, the general secretary of Alba, could be seen clapping outside the Commons.

The two MPs were elected as SNP MPs, but quit after a fallout involving former First Minster Alex Salmond.

MacAskill is a former Scottish Government Justice Secretary.

SNP MP Joanna Cherry tweeted: "Whatever you think about the interventions of @eastlothianmp & @JNHanvey at #PMQs the reaction & the rage shown towards them contrasts sharply with the seeming inaction in the face of repeated lying by the PM at the despatch box."

In a letter to Johnson released after the protest, Hanvey and MacAskill wrote:

"Scotland cannot, and will not, be held hostage within a Union completely detached from the needs, realities, and aspirations of her people.

"While one in three of our people live in fuel poverty, Scotland is energy rich with abundant resources far greater than our needs. For decades now, this wealth has contributed immeasurably to the energy security of these islands, yet the revenues have only served to feed the largesse of the UK Treasury.

"Meanwhile some of the poorest and most vulnerable members of our society face the prospect of freezing and going without food this winter.

"This indefensible failure of your government and its inability to meaningfully tackle the cost-of-living catastrophe, are feeding a groundswell of people in Scotland who demand another say on their constitutional future."
