Alan Shearer has slammed Newcastle United for being wasteful in front of goal as the Magpies fell to defeat at Manchester City. Goals from Phil Foden and Bernardo Silva either side of the break sealed a 2-0 victory at the Etihad for the defending champions, and condemed the visitors to a third straight loss in all competitions.
Eddie Howe named three changes to the team who suffered a heartbreaking defeat to Manchester United in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley. Nick Pope unsurprisingly returned to the side, Anthony Gordon was handed a full debut, and captain Jamaal Lascelles replaced Fabian Schar who was ruled out through concussion.
Sean Longstaff and Callum Wilson were both guilty of not capitalising on chances in the first-half, and a triple change following the interval led to a flurry of openings. Joelinton could not convert a cross despite being well-placed in the box, while Ederson came out quickly to deny substitute Alexander Isak.

Magpies legend Shearer seemingly shared the frustration of the Toon Army, when he took to social media to offer an update during the match. The club's all-time leading goalscorer simply wrote 'got to put those chances away man'.
This message was compounded just minutes later, when Silva made sure of the result with a clinical finish from the edge of the box. Shearer could not hide his disappointment following City's second goal, and his mid-match verdict reflects the story of Newcastle's recent results.
Shearer posted 'how many chances do they need', and the Magpies proved unable to find a way through before the full-time whistle. The defeat means Newcastle remain fifth in the table, with closest rivals Liverpool and Tottenham due to face Manchester United and Wolves respectively.
