Alan Shearer's Newcastle verdict after Arsenal draw with a 'little help' from 'brilliant' star

Alan Shearer admits he was a huge fan of Newcastle United's dogged display in the hard-fought draw at Arsenal. The Magpies maintained their unbeaten run with a stalemate against the league leaders, courtesy of a 'little help' from Nick Pope who made a fine late stop to deny Eddie Nketiah.

Eddie Howe made one change from the side who were held at home in their last outing by Leeds United on New Year's Eve. Callum Wilson returned from illness to start up front in place of Chris Wood, with Allan Saint-Maximin again amongst the substitutes.

Chances were few and far between for the visitors, who were forced to defend for long spells against the Gunners. However, the hosts managed just four shots on target despite enjoying the lionshare of possession.

It is a point which ensured Newcastle held on to third spot despite Manchester United's home victory over Bournemouth, although the Red Devils do hold a game in hand. Shearer shared his verdict on social media following the full-time whistle, and explained everything he loved about the black-and-white display.

The Newcastle legend posted: "A great defensive display from the Toon with a little help from the brilliant Nick Pope. Hard to beat, hard to play against. Love it."
