Alan Shearer in crowd as Sting performs special show in Newcastle with help from Jimmy Nail

Alan Shearer and Jimmy Nail were among the packed audience in Newcastle on Thursday night, to witness a very special show from music legend Sting, on his return to home turf, with Jimmy getting up to sing with the Wallsend native.

Last month it was confirmed that Sting, frontman of The Police and the man who's given us classics like Fields of Gold and When We Dance as a solo artist, would be taking to the stage at the Live Theatre, to celebrate the Tyneside venue's 50th birthday. Those who were lucky enough to get their hands on tickets were promised a night of Sting talking about his illustrious career and performing stripped back versions of some of his famous tracks.

Those who were there on Thursday, were quick to take to Twitter to share just what an amazing evening they'd had and, among those in attendance were Newcastle United icon Shearer and singer and actor Jimmy, who himself has been on the Live Theatre stage, as part of its birthday festivities and joined Sting on stage on Thursday evening to perform some songs from musical The Last Ship.

Sharing a backstage photo of himself and Jimmy, alongside Sting, Alan wrote: "3 Geordies who did ok!!" And, as soon as the legendary number 9 posted the picture, reactions to it came pouring in. One of his followers responded: "Imagine having a few brown ales and running into this trio in the bar. What a trip lol."

A second replied: "Amazing! Three Geordie treasures," while a third quipped: "Never knew Bruce Willis, Marv from Home Alone and Philip Schofield were Geordies fair play."

Even Piers Morgan headed into the comments thread, branding the photo: "Iconic."

Twitter was full of reactions from those who'd be at the Live to see the special show from Sting, with one writing: "Privileged to see Sting at the Live Theatre last night. A brilliant performer and still very proud of his North Eastern roots." Equally thrilled to have been there, another tweeted: "Great show! Loved it!"
