Alan Shearer has admitted that Bruno Guimaraes could get into any Premier League team on his current form as he helped Newcastle into the top four with a victory over Tottenham.
The Magpies ran out 2-1 winners over Antonio Conte's side in north London thanks to first-half goals from Callum Wilson and Miguel Almiron. Harry Kane pulled one back for Spurs in the second period but it wasn't enough to claim anything from the game as Tottenham suffered their first home defeat of the season.
The result moved the Magpies into the Champions League places - leapfrogging Chelsea and Manchester United in the process. They have lost the joint-fewest number of matches in the Premier League, too, having fallen to just one defeat in their opening 12 games - a 2-1 loss at Liverpool.
Someone who has impressed for the Magpies during their impressive start is Guimaraes, with the Brazilian performing excellently at the start of Newcastle's midfield. He has been partnered alongside Joelinton as the two no.8s in Newcastle's three-man system, with Sean Longstaff as the deep-lying midfielder.
Former Newcastle ace Shearer has lauded Guimaraes' recent form and believes he can slot into any Premier League team and not make them weaker. This includes Manchester City's trio of Kevin de Bruyne, Bernardo Silva and Rodri, while Arsenal's midfield has also stood out this campaign.
When reflecting on Newcastle's performance at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, he told the BBC: "Other than the first 15 minutes against Spurs, I thought Newcastle were the better team and they deserved their win.
Does Bruno Guimaraes get into Man City's midfield? Let us know in the comments below!
"Tottenham looked quite average and one-dimensional in comparison, while Newcastle had plenty of ideas when they came forward. It was always going to be tough for them once Spurs pulled a goal back so early in the second half, but this Newcastle team has got a bit of steel about them, and they never panicked at any stage.
"The big thing for me when I watch them is how fit they look when they press, and how well organised they are. In midfield, Bruno Guimaraes has been so good, he could get into any team in the Premier League on his current form.
"Three of the back four against Spurs - Sven Botman, Dan Burn and Trippier - are Howe signings, along with Pope in goal, and they have all made the team more solid, with a better defensive understanding."
Guimaraes was linked with a big-money move to Arsenal, before he eventually joined Newcastle in January in a deal worth around £40m, becoming their second-most expensive player behind Joelinton. After a slow start to life at St James' Park, Guimaraes slowly began to find his feet when he cemented his place in the starting XI.
The Brazilian ended the campaign on five goals and was one of the Magpies' standout players as they escaped relegation and finished towards the top half of the division. Now, Guimaraes will be hoping Newcastle can push towards the Champions League as they sit in a more healthy position than this time last year.
