Alan Hutton insists Rangers win over Dortmund will be biggest EVER European scalp in club's history

Alan Hutton featured in many an iconic game during his six-year spell at Rangers but the former defender claims that sealing another victory over German giants Borussia Dortmund would top the lot on an European stage.

Rangers sensationally triumphed 4-2 first leg winners at the Westfalenstadion last Thursday and now Marco Rose's side come to Glasgow hoping to stop a party at Ibrox, with a place in the Europa League last 16 up for grabs.

However Hutton reckons the home support will have to play their part once again if the Gers want to progress.

He told Sky Sports News: "I've played in a lot of these European nights at home and the crowd have definitely played their part.

"It will be rocking tonight at Ibrox. There will be 50,000 fans in there and they will have to get the team going at certain periods of time.

"Dortmund are a good team, they will have possession of the ball so the crowd will play a massive part tonight."

Giovanni van Bronckhorst will be determined to build on the progress his predecessor Steven Gerrard made in making Rangers a formidable force in Europe once again.

Hutton thinks the manager will want to prove that the performance in Germany wasn't just a one off and even suggests a victory over Dortmund at Ibrox would surpass the joy of beating Lyon 3-0 in France, back when he was a Rangers player.

He added: "I think it will definitely outdo that. Obviously the Lyon game was a fantastic away performance.

"We won 3-0. Unfortunately the reverse fixture wasn't so good.

"I think that if Rangers can go through tonight, and get a decent win, this will be the biggest European performance in the Rangers history.

"It's a huge task in front of them but I think they have the players to go deliver a decent performance."
