Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president K.S. Alagiri on Monday urged the Indian government to ensure that a substantial portion of the financial assistance to the Sri Lankan government go for the welfare of the Tamils in the Island Nation.
In a statement in Chennai, he said India had extended financial assistance to the tune of $2.4 billion and it should take steps to secure the rights of Tamils and plantation Tamils.
Still the Tamils in Sri Lanka are not able to get rights on a par with the Sinhalese. The government in The North Eastern province has not been given adequate powers and the Sri Lankan government is not able to solve the problems of Tamils. The Indian government must also bring pressure to implement the 13th amendment,” Mr. Alagiri said.
He also congratulated Senthil Thondaman, the new leader of the Ceylon Workers’s Congress.
