The 2023 Iron Bowl ended in dramatic fashion on Saturday night when Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe threw a 31-yard touchdown pass on a fourth down with under a minute to go to secure the 27–24 win over Auburn.
A narrative regarding the Crimson Tide’s “luck” started circulating after the win with people saying things like “this would only happen to Alabama.”
An Auburn reporter asked coach Nick Saban about the team’s “luck” after the game, prompting Saban to recap some good fortunate that came during 2013’s famous “Kick Six” game. In that matchup, Alabama attempted a 57-yard field goal at the end of regulation, which was short and Auburn’s Chris Davis returned it to the length of the field for a shocking game-winning touchdown.
“We’ve been on both sides of the good fortune and the misfortune,” Saban said. “I got to admit, we had good fortune. But, it still comes down to our ability to execute.”

It’s an interesting argument from Saban, who makes a fair point. But obviously, there’s bound to be plenty of “luck” over the span of any single football game as well.
