Presidential elections in Egypt will take place from December 10 to 12. President Abdel Fattah al Sisi is running for a third term which outcome is predictable, even more now that the election campaign has been overshadowed by the Gaza war. But also because no serious other candidate is facing him, as lamented by human rights defenders.
Africa is facing an unprecedented food crisis according to a new report from the UN, released earlier this week. More than three quarters of the population living on the continent cannot afford a healthy diet and a fifth are undernourished. This dire situation is in large part due to grain shortages triggered by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, armed conflict in Africa itself, climate change and the fallout from the Covid pandemic.
The Guinean capital, Conakry, is currently hosting an international film festival called CinéNomad Afrique. The event is aimed at forging a renaissance in Guinean cinema - partly by training rural populations in the art of film-making. The initiative is supported by French director, Michel Gondry, who has founded an organisation called l’Usine de Films Amateurs - 'the factory of amateur films'. Our correspondents visited a village where the local community came together to make their own film.
