Ajax star explains why he rejected Man Utd transfer after Erik ten Hag contact

An Ajax star has confirmed that Erik ten Hag has contacted him regarding a move to Manchester United.

Ten Hag has not been shy in reaching out to former players he has managed this transfer window. Frenkie de Jong had been the Reds' top transfer target before having to park the move due to the Dutchman's wage situation.

Lisandro Martinez meanwhile was signed by United as a new option at centre-back. Despite his poor performance at Brentford, Ten Hag stuck with the ex-Ajax player against Liverpool and the move paid off.

However, it would appear that the Dutch coach attempted to sign at least one more of his former Ajax stars this summer. According to Brian Brobbey, who had been on loan at Ajax from RB Leipzig, Ten Hag reached out to him about a move to the Theatre of Dreams.

Brobbey told Voetbal International : "I absolutely wanted to come back to Ajax. Erik also wanted to work with me again, he texted me once to see if I was open to it.

"But I thanked him nicely and told him I wanted to go back to Ajax. My friends are here, Ajax’s playing style… it just wasn’t finished yet.

"I first have to really succeed here as a striker in the Ajax first team. That’s also how the past six months have felt, when I played here on loan.

"After that I really had the feeling that I needed to come back." Ajax boss Alfred Schreuder appeared to confirm last weekend that Antony had had his head turned by United and the Brazilian did not feature in their most recent game against Sparta Rotterdam.
